STUDY ABROAD CHECKLIST
Here's a checklist of steps when applying for a study abroad program!
PRE-DEPARTURE
STEP 1: RESEARCH
☐ TERRY FOUNDATION STUDY ABROAD FUNDING:
Funding Amount: $5,000
For fall/spring semester programs, you can combine your regular Terry stipend with the $5,000.
Funding will not be disbursed until you are registered in the study abroad course(s) at UTD. Be prepared to pay some things up front.
Requirements for Funding:
Must complete an academic year (two long semesters) in the Terry program before you can study abroad
Must study abroad prior to your last year of Terry funding (cannot study abroad fall/spring of your senior year)
Cannot be on probation
Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and a minimum 2.5 semester GPA
For May/summer programs, you must study abroad for at least two weeks and take at least three credit hours.
For fall/spring semester programs, you must study abroad for at least twelve weeks and take at least twelve credit hours.
!! Submit proposal to Terry Foundation for study abroad funding by deadlines: Fall: July 1 / Spring: November 1 / Summer: May 1
☐ REVIEW TERRY SCHOLARS WHO HAVE STUDIED ABROAD
Contact scholars who have studied abroad in a program you're interested in to ask questions. Ask Cassie/Sheila for alumni personal emails or find on Discord. Also watch the latest Terry study abroad panel located on this website.
☐ REVIEW UTD'S EDUCATION ABROAD WEBSITE for study abroad program information.

☐ TALK TO YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR
Make an Appointment with your advisor to discuss courses to take abroad, credit hours, and how courses will come back to UTD (as electives, major/minor
courses).
☐ MAKE AN ADVISING APPOINTMENT WITH EDUCATION ABROAD to discuss what to do as far as requirements for study abroad paperwork.
☐ MEET WITH SHEILA AND CASSIE to give updates on your progress and ask questions (example: what to do to request study abroad funding from the Terry Foundation).
☐ TAKE CARE OF YOUR PASSPORT BUSINESS
If you don’t already have a passport, apply for one EARLY. Visit Passport Services here on campus to schedule an appointment. Passports are good for 10 years, so make sure it does not expire during your program!
STEP 2: APPLY

DEADLINE: FALL (Feb. 15) / SPRING (Aug. 15)
Affiliated Partner / Third Party Providers
OPEN: 6-9 months in advance
DEADLINE: Fall & Summer (Feb. 15) // Spring (Aug. 15)
Internship / Independent Study
OPEN: One year in advance
DEADLINE: Typically 3-4 months before the start of the program
Required Fees: (billed once you are enrolled in the study abroad course(s))
$75 application fee
Insurance fee of $30 per week (w/ISOS)
☐ APPLY TO UTD STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPS
International Education Fund (IEF) Scholarship
DEADLINES: Fall: June 15 // Spring: October 15 // Summer: March 15
Amount of IEF depends upon the length of program and financial need. The IEF is not a guaranteed scholarship for everyone, so please take your application seriously!
Summer: Less than 4 weeks - up to $800
Summer: 4-10 weeks - up to $2,000
Full Semester, over 10 weeks - up to $3200
*EPPS Majors - Global Engagement Scholarship:
Must demonstrate financial need and enrolled in a UTD course with a study abroad component or enrolled in a study abroad program that transfers credit back to UTD
DEADLINE: April 15
☐ DRAFT & SUBMIT A PROPOSAL TO THE TERRY FOUNDATION
Email to Sheila/Cassie first to review before submitting through the portal to the Foundation. Remember, you have to be accepted to the study abroad program first in order to request funding
Your proposal must include:
Exact dates, city/country, name of program, total number of credit hours you expect to earn and what they will come back as (for example, upper-level elective), name of course(s), as well as why you chose this program and how it will benefit you in your degree & future career/plans. Finally, thank the foundation. Be sure to also attach your acceptance email to the program in your submission.

☐ OPTIONAL: APPLY FOR EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS
STEP 3: FORMS
☐ Follow the Pre-Departure Checklist on Education Abroad's website to make final preparations. Packing & phone suggestions are also listed.
☐ Register Your Trip with International SOS. All UTD students traveling abroad must do this!
WHILE ABROAD/POST STUDY ABROAD
STEP 4: FOLLOW UP
☐ Send Cassie/Sheila pictures of your study abroad experience for our Terry website/social media pages.
☐ On the Terry Foundation’s website, under “Current Scholars,” go to “Share Your Story” and fill out the form to share your photos/videos.
☐ For exchange/affiliated 3rd party programs, request an official transcript be sent from your host institution to the following address.
You cannot get credit or graduate until the Education Abroad office receives this transcript.
